What Makes an Original Painting One of a Kind?

There is something special about knowing that the painting hanging on your wall exists nowhere else in the world.

An original painting isn’t simply an image. It is a physical object that has passed through the artist’s hands, carrying the marks, textures, decisions, experiments and happy accidents that happened while it was being created.

This is especially true with abstract and fluid art, where even the artist couldn’t recreate a painting exactly if they tried.

But what actually makes an original painting one of a kind? And what are you getting when you choose an original artwork rather than a reproduction?

Let’s take a closer look.

What Is an Original Painting?

An original painting is the actual artwork created by the artist, rather than a printed reproduction of that artwork.

Every brushstroke, poured layer of paint, mark and texture you see is part of the physical piece the artist created.

This is different from an art print, poster or reproduction, where an existing image is reproduced onto another surface. Prints can be beautiful pieces of art in their own right, but an original painting is the source artwork itself.

In abstract art, the distinction can be particularly interesting. Tate describes abstract art as art that uses elements such as shapes, colors, forms and gestural marks rather than attempting to reproduce visual reality exactly.

That freedom makes the physical process of creating an abstract painting an important part of the finished work.

1. The Artist’s Process Can Never Be Repeated Exactly

Some styles of painting allow an artist to make several works that look very similar. Fluid abstract painting is much less predictable.

I create my abstract paintings by combining acrylic paint with different mediums and experimenting with techniques such as pouring, splattering, spinning and moving the canvas.

One of the things I enjoy most about fluid painting is that the paint always has a mind of its own. Gravity, movement, consistency, temperature and the way the colors interact can all influence the final result, so even very small changes can take a painting in a completely different direction.

Even if I used the same colors and techniques again, the paint would never move in exactly the same way.

That unpredictability is part of what makes each original unique.

2. Every Original Painting Has Its Own Details

Look closely at an original abstract painting and you’ll usually discover details that aren’t obvious from across the room.

There may be tiny cells where colors have separated, raised areas of paint, translucent layers, unexpected lines, subtle changes in gloss or places where two colors have met without fully mixing.

These details give an original artwork its physical presence.

They also mean the painting can change depending on where you stand, the direction of the light and how closely you look at it.

A piece like A Secret in Four Parts, for example, combines purple, teal and magenta across an extra-large multi-part composition. The original is created using acrylic and pouring medium on gallery canvas and finished with layers of varnish that intensify and protect its surface.

On the other end of the scale, a small painting like Are We Moving measures just 15 × 15 cm — but it is every bit as original and one of a kind.

Original art doesn’t have to be enormous or intimidating to be special.

3. It Contains the Artist’s Decisions — and Their Accidents

Artists make hundreds of decisions while creating a painting.

Some are deliberate:

• Which colors should sit beside one another?
• Should the composition feel calm or energetic?
• Does the painting need another layer?
• Should the canvas be tilted, spun, poured over or left alone?

Others happen completely by accident.

And sometimes those accidents become the most interesting part of the painting.

A streak of color may suddenly break through another layer. Two paints might react in an unexpected way. A poured section may travel somewhere the artist never intended it to go.

Instead of trying to control every millimeter of the canvas, the abstract pouring process leaves room for experimentation.

I always say:

“There are no plans, there are only experiments.”

That balance between intention and unpredictability is part of what makes each original painting impossible to reproduce exactly.

4. An Original Has a Physical History

A painting doesn’t stop having a story once the artist puts down the brush — or pouring cup.

From the moment it is created, an original artwork begins developing a history of its own.

In the art world, this documented history is known as provenance. The Smithsonian Archives of American Art explains that provenance research can help establish the identity and authenticity of a particular artwork, while Christie’s describes provenance as the documented history of an object’s ownership.

You certainly don’t need to be collecting museum masterpieces to appreciate this idea.

If you buy an artwork directly from a living artist, you become part of that painting’s story.

You know who created it and where it came from. Perhaps years from now it will move homes with you, be inherited by someone you love or become the painting everyone in the family associates with a particular room.

That story belongs to the physical artwork.

5. A Certificate of Authenticity Helps Document the Artwork

When buying an original artwork, documentation matters.

For a first-time art buyer, this might sound rather formal. But it is simply a useful way of documenting what you’ve bought and where it came from.

6. No One Else Can Own the Same Painting

This is perhaps the simplest answer to the question.

When you buy an original painting, that specific artwork becomes yours.

There isn’t another identical one sitting in a warehouse.

There won’t be another collector with exactly the same painting hanging above their sofa.

Once a one-of-a-kind original has sold, that physical artwork is gone from the artist’s collection.

Two people can stand in front of the same abstract painting and see completely different things.

One person sees a landscape. Someone else sees a figure, a storm, a flower or an underwater world. Another person doesn’t see a recognizable object at all — they simply love the colors and the feeling they create.

There isn’t necessarily a correct interpretation.

That is one of the pleasures of living with abstract art. Your relationship with the painting can change over time.

You may notice something after six months that you had never seen before. A color may look completely different when you move the painting to another room. A piece you originally chose because it felt energetic may later remind you of a particular period in your life.

The artist creates the painting.

You create your relationship with it.

Does Original Art Have to Match Your Home?

Not perfectly.

In fact, choosing art only because its colors match your cushions can make the process much harder than it needs to be.

A painting can complement a room without matching every color already in it. Sometimes contrast is exactly what brings a space to life.

Think about the feeling you want the room to have. Calm? Playful? Dramatic? Warm? Energizing?

Then pay attention to the paintings you keep returning to.

Your first reaction is often a better guide than a perfectly coordinated color palette.

Why Buy an Original Painting?

People choose original art for all sorts of reasons.

You may want something completely unique for your home. You might enjoy supporting an independent artist. Perhaps you’re beginning an art collection, celebrating a milestone, or you’ve simply found a painting you can’t stop thinking about.

You don’t need to be an art expert.

You don’t need a gallery-sized house.

And you don’t have to understand why you love a painting before you’re allowed to love it.

An original painting is ultimately something very simple: one artwork, created by one artist, at one moment in time.

It cannot happen in exactly the same way again.
