There is something special about knowing that the painting hanging on your wall exists nowhere else in the world.
An original painting isn’t simply an image. It is a physical object that has passed through the artist’s hands, carrying all the little marks, textures, decisions and happy accidents that happened while it was being created.
With abstract and fluid art especially, no two paintings can ever turn out exactly the same.
So what actually makes an original painting one of a kind?
Every Painting Has Its Own Journey
I create my abstract paintings by combining acrylic paint with different mediums and experimenting with techniques such as pouring, splattering, spinning and moving the canvas.
One of the things I enjoy most about fluid painting is that the paint always has a mind of its own.
Gravity, movement, consistency, temperature and the way the colours interact can all influence the final result. Even very small changes can take a painting in a completely different direction.
If I used the same colours and techniques again, the paint would still never move in exactly the same way.
That unpredictability is part of what makes each original unique.

The Little Details Matter
One of my favourite things about original art is how much more you notice when you see it up close.
There may be tiny cells where colours have separated, translucent layers, fine lines, raised areas of paint or places where two colours have met without fully blending.
These details give a painting its physical presence.
They also mean that the artwork can look slightly different depending on the light, where you stand and how closely you look.
That is something a photograph can never quite capture.
Some of the Best Parts Are Unplanned
When I start a painting, I may have a colour palette or a general idea in mind, but I don’t try to control every part of the process.
Sometimes the most interesting section of a painting begins as an accident.
A colour might travel somewhere unexpected. Two paints may react in a surprising way. A new shape might appear after I tilt or spin the canvas.
That element of experimentation is a big part of why I enjoy abstract painting.
As I often say:
“There are no plans, there are only experiments.”
An Original Painting Has a Story
An original artwork also has a history that begins the moment it is created.
If you buy a painting directly from an artist, you know where it came from and who created it. You become part of that painting’s story.
Perhaps it will move homes with you, remind you of a particular time in your life or eventually be passed on to someone you love.
That personal history becomes part of the artwork too.

No One Else Can Own the Same Painting
This is probably the simplest answer of all.
When you buy an original painting, that exact artwork becomes yours.
There isn’t another identical version sitting somewhere else. Once it has sold, it is gone from my collection.
And original art doesn’t have to mean huge or expensive.
